TNX Advisory, part of the Tenex group

Growth strategy and corporate finance for law firms.

We help law-firm leadership decide how to grow. We compare building, hiring, combining, acquiring, raising capital and holding on the same terms, recommend one, and check the forecast against results afterwards.

What we do

Most growth decisions come down to six options.

Growth has become a capital-allocation decision, made under pressure on margins from AI and with partner profit at stake. Most advice looks at one or two routes. We price all six on your own numbers so the board can compare them properly.

1

Build

Grow the practice you have. Slower, but durable and usually the cheapest growth per pound spent.

2

Hire

Bring in laterals and teams. Fast and visible, but expensive, and books often shrink on arrival.

3

Combine

Merge with another firm. It changes the mix within two years, and the governance terms decide the outcome.

4

Acquire

Buy a team, a practice or a capability. Often accretive in the first year if the price is right.

5

Raise

Bring in outside capital to fund growth now, priced honestly, including where regulation limits it.

6

Hold

Stay the course. It is never free, and it is the baseline every other option should be measured against.

How we work

Every option is measured the same way.

For each option we model the change in profit per equity partner, peak cash, risk-adjusted value and payback, under a base case, a downside and an AI stress case. Four tests then decide what can be recommended at all.

Illustrative example for a fictional UK firm with 140 partners and £180m revenue. A failed test rules an option out, whatever its return.

Culture

Will the partnership still recognise itself? We test this in non-attributed partner interviews.

Conflicts

Which clients could be lost or put at risk, priced into the numbers rather than noted in passing.

Control

Who decides after the deal: votes, vetoes and the terms of any outside capital.

Reversibility

If it goes wrong, how far back the firm can get, at what cost and how quickly.

6

Every option priced

All six routes on one page, on your figures, so the board is choosing between real alternatives.

24

A forecast we sign

A 24-month forecast of revenue, profit per partner and the few measures that matter for the recommendation, kept on the record.

6, 12, 24

Reviewed afterwards

Written reviews at 6, 12 and 24 months are included in the fee. The original forecast sits beside the actuals, including where we were wrong.

Sometimes the right answer is not to do a deal at all. Our fee is the same either way, which is why the advice can be trusted.

Services

Fixed scope, fixed fee, led by a founding partner.

Most firms start with a Partner Market Briefing, which we offer from January at no fee. We are taking bookings now for engagements that begin in April 2027.

Partner Market BriefingNo fee

Forty-five minutes on what the partner market is doing around your firm: who moved, from where, at what cost, and which of your practices are exposed. Built on TNX Market Intelligence.

45 minutes

Lateral Cohort Review

Did the partners you hired in the last three years bring what they promised? Book claimed against billed against retained, by cohort, set against what was paid.

3 to 4 weeks

Practice and Office Launch Plan

Should you open this practice or this city, and how? The business case, a hiring map of target profiles, the P&L and the break-even month.

4 to 6 weeks

The Growth Underwrite

All six options priced on one page, a 24-month forecast on the record, and written reviews at months 6, 12 and 24.

8 weeks

Strategic Growth Office

A quarterly board pack, live tracking of every lateral cohort, combination screening and partner-market alerts between meetings.

Annual retainer

50% of an entry product's fee is credited against a larger TNX Advisory engagement signed within six months.

If a merger partner or an investor has approached you, we also run a two-week “Should we take the meeting?” review, Combination Readiness, and Capital and Investor Readiness.

The Growth Underwrite in eight weeks

Three checkpoints with your board sponsor, so nothing in the final paper is a surprise.

  1. Week 1

    Baseline

Built from your data room, with corrections invited.

  2. Week 3

    Your firm in numbers

First checkpoint: we agree the baseline and the measures.

  3. Week 4

    The options

Second checkpoint: which options pass the four tests, and why.

  4. Week 6

    Draft recommendation

Third checkpoint: a pre-read for the board sponsor.

  5. Week 8

    Board decision

The recommendation, the forecast and the baseline we will measure against.

What we need from you: three years of accounts, anonymised partner points, top-client revenue and the decision provisions of the partnership deed; eight to twelve non-attributed partner interviews; a board sponsor; and three 60-minute checkpoints.

Independence and discretion

Our advice never depends on whether you hire through Tenex.

These six rules are written into every engagement letter.

  1. Fixed fees, never tied to hires

“Don't hire” and “hold” are valid answers, and they are paid the same as any other.

  2. You choose who recruits

If the answer is to hire, use any recruiter you like. Our fees are never credited against Tenex Search fees or any transaction.

  3. Your partners are off-limits

While we advise you, and for 12 months after, Tenex Search will not approach your partners in the practices in scope without your consent.

  4. Your data stays in the engagement

Client material lives only in a dedicated engagement workspace and never leaves it, including into Tenex Search's records. Interview notes never enter an AI tool, and named partners sign everything.

  5. No rival conflicts

We never advise two direct rivals on the same question at the same time, and we will tell you if that rule is ever in play.

  6. Public figures only

Our market views use public data and Tenex's own knowledge of the partner market. We never use or seek another client's confidential information.
